Description: Police Officer DeVane was ambushed and shot by an unknown assailant as he walked home after completing his shift. Officer DeVane died of his injuries three days later. This shooting occurred during an outbreak of violence by Union soldiers against the local police force. A fellow officer had been shot but not mortally wounded the night before when he arrested a soldier for public intoxication.
