Description: Trooper Elson was shot and killed after making a traffic stop. As Trooper Elson approached the vehicle which had tinted windows, the suspect exited the car with an automatic assault rifle and opened fire on the trooper. The suspect fired as many as 36 shots, at least two rounds penetrated Trooper Elson's vest. Trooper Elson graduated from the academy in December 1998. While in the academy, he was a roommate of Trooper Richard T. Gaston, who was killed in the line of duty on March 4, 1999.
