Description: Special Officer Eaves was shot at the rail depot in East St. Louis, Illinois as he and two other officers attempted to arrest two train employees who were stealing from a boxcar. The officers were concealed in a shanty to conduct surveillance on the boxcars after a series of thefts. When the officers emerged and ordered the men to halt, Officer Eaves was fatally shot.
