Description: Deputy Marshal Etherington was lynched after he and two marshals attempted to serve a warrant. As the marshals were chased by the mob, Deputy Etherington shot one of his attackers. Deputy Etherington was taken into custody for his protection and the mob surrounded the jail. When the mob learned that the man that Deputy Etherington had shot had died, the mob removed Deputy Etherington from the county jail and hung him from a telephone pole. Twenty people were indicted for the murder.
