Description: Deputy Marshal Ellis was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect in Casey County, New York. Marshal Ellis and a friend spotted a horse tied to a tree branch along side the road and went to investigate. Marshal Ellis spotted a man and asked him to identify himself. The man was actually a suspect wanted for illegal distilling and Marshal Ellis told him to surrender. Marshal Ellis was shot in the abdomen and the offender was fatally wounded. Marshal Ellis was taken to a physician four miles away and died of his injuries. The suspect was found frozen to death the following Monday.
