Description: Deputy Sheriff Exley was fatally shot by a group of workers on strike that erupted into a riot. Deputy Exley was en route to the scene of the Pressed Steel Car Company when the mob stopped the streetcar and ordered everyone to get off. Deputy Exley, who was in plainclothes, refused the order, showed his badge and stated that he was a deputy. The mob stormed the streetcar. Deputy Exley fired in self-defense and was shot from behind. Deputy Exley was removed from the streetcar and beaten. State Police Privates Jack Smith and John Williams were also fatally shot while attempting to quell the riot. Two other troopers were injured but survived.
