Description: Sheriff Elder was shot in the head at point-blank range as he attempted to arrest two suspects regarding a murder. Deputy Sheriff James Elder, the sheriff's brother, responded to the sounds of gunfire and engaged in a gun battle with the suspects who had just killed the sheriff. Deputy Elder was shot several times and died at the scene as well. A third officer, Deputy Sheriff Jack Bailey, was also shot in this incident and died the next day.
