Description: Guard Epperson was shot by an inmate who was attempting to escape the Rusk Prison camp. The inmate grabbed the gun of another guard and used it to kill Guard Epperson and keep the other guards at bay while he and three other inmates escaped on horseback. Two of the convicts were caught several days later but Guard Epperson's assailant was not captured.
