Description: Deputy Sheriff Escalante was confronted and shot by two suspects while in front of his home as he was leaving for work. Deputy Escalante drew his weapon, prior to being shot, in an attempt to defend himself. According to a preliminary witness statement, Deputy Escalante identified himself as a deputy before he was shot. Deputy Escalante, who was not in uniform, worked at the Men?s Central Jail, and guarded some of the county?s dangerous inmates. The two suspects, alleged gang members, have been arrested.
