Description: Deputies Erwin and Rowland were processing a traffic violator on the local freeway when an eighteen-wheeler truck failed to change lanes and struck Deputy Erwin as he attempted to get into his patrol unit. Four cars were involved in the accident. Deputy Erwin was thrown 132 feet from the point of impact which killed him instantly. Deputy Rowland suffered minor injuries.
