Description: On March 4, 1887, Police Officer Freeborn was attacked and beaten at the central station by an inmate wielding a 30 pound iron bar. The inmate requested a drink of water but it was a ruse to get the cell door open so he could escape. Officer Freeborn was transported to the hospital and pieces of his skull were removed. The inmate was charged with felonious assault and sentenced to four years. Officer Freeborn was unable to resume his duties and died due to a congestion of the brain on April 10, 1894.
