Description: Patrolmen John Fugate and Thomas Caniff were in the process of investigating a grocery store break-in when the suspect, who was hiding behind the counter, opened fire. Both men were shot in the liver. Thomas Caniff died from his injuries two weeks later. John Fugate never recovered from his injuries and spent the rest of his life in the care of Athens Hospital. He died in 1964 of hepatoma.
