Description: On January 8, 1904, Centre Keeper Fitzgerald was shot by an inmate who was attempting to escape from the New Jersey State Prison. Deputy Keeper William Harney was struck over the head with a hammer and robbed of his gun by the inmate who then shot and wounded Centre Keeper Fitzgerald. He was transported to the hospital where doctors were unable to locate and remove the bullet which eventually resulted in partial paralysis of his left side. Centre Keeper Fitzgerald medically retired in 1906 and died due to hemiplegia on May 10, 1911.
