Description: Deputy Fitzgerald was killed during an escape attempt by three inmates. Deputy Fitzgerald and Deputy Joseph Singer were transporting three inmates from the Auburn Correctional Facility to the Westchester County Courthouse for court appearances. As they pulled off the New York State Thruway, the inmates attempted to escape and seized Deputy Singer's gun. A struggle ensued and, when it was over, Deputy Fitzgerald and an inmate were dead and Deputy Singer was wounded. After three trials, the two inmates were convicted of felony murder and sentenced to 25 years to life.
