Description: Deputy Collector Foote was shot then lynched by an unlawful mob in retaliation for law enforcement action taken by Deputy Foote to prevent an assault on a citizen. On December 24, 1883, Deputy Collector Foote responded to an incident in Yazoo City, Mississippi, where a mob was intent on assaulting a man. Deputy Foote intervened and placed himself between the mob and their intended victim. A shootout ensued and three men in the mob were killed. Deputy Foote and three other men were taken into custody. Four days later, on December 29th, a mob raided the jail and lynched Deputy Foote and the three other men.
