Description: Sergeant Gantz died while executing a raid for illicit liquor. Sergeant Gantz and other officers responded to a tip that illicit liquor was hidden at the bottom of a deep, dry well. As Sergeant Gantz was lowered into the well to recover the evidence, he was overcome by black damp gas and lost consciousness. Black damp gas is a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen with a low concentration of oxygen and acts as an asphyxiant. Sergeant Gantz's body was recovered from the well 45 minutes later.
