Description: Deputy Sheriff Gillis was shot when he took a rifle from an intoxicated hunter who was firing shots into the air. The hunter removed a second rifle from the car and shot Deputy Gillis in the chest. Deputy Gillis was on vacation with his wife in the Laguna Recreation Area located in San Diego County, California when this incident occurred. His assailant was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
