Description: On February 22, 1988, Police Officer Gorrell and Officer Serna were shot by a mentally deranged homeless suspect. The plainclothes officers were on foot patrol when they stopped the suspect. Officer Gorrell, who was shot in the head, was transferred to the hospital where he remained in a coma until his death on July 5, 1988. Officer Serna survived his injuries. The suspect was taken into custody.
