Description: Police Officer Griffin and Patrolman R.D. Bentz were shot from the running board of a vehicle as they attempted to take three bootlegging suspects into custody. Officer Griffin died at the scene. Patrolman Bentz returned fire and wounded a suspect. One of the suspects, a 17-year-old, was arrested and transferred to juvenile court. Two other suspects were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. One of these suspects had been convicted of the death of Butte-Silver Bow Deputy Charles Streb (25-W: 9) in 1911 and sentenced to serve 100 years in prison but only served a few years before his sentence was commuted by the Governor.
