Description: Detective Guerra died from injuries sustained three days prior after responding to a residential apartment building fire in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. As Officer Guerra and his partner stepped off of the elevator, they were immediately overcome by heavy smoke and carbon monoxide fumes. Both officers were found unconscious and were transported to the hospital. Officer Guerra died of his injuries on April 9, 2014. His partner survived the incident. The 16-year-old juvenile suspect was charged with second degree murder and arson.
