Description: Deputy Marshal Gilstrap was shot and killed in an ambush while attempting to arrest several outlaws in Vinita, Oklahoma. Marshal Gilstrap and a posse were tracking the murderers of Deputy Marshal J. Henry Vier when they were ambushed by a gang of men. The marshals retreated for reinforcements, but Marshal Gilstrap was fatally shot and another marshal was wounded in the incident. One of the suspects in the gun battle was later shot and killed. The other two suspects were arrested in 1908 but were acquitted.
