Description: Chief Gossett, Chief Charles Coker, Sheriff Waldo Williams, Undersheriff Ed Sumrill, and Police Officer W.F. McKinzey were in search of a group of bank robbers who were last seen driving a black Buick. Chief Gossett and the other officers spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The suspects exited their car and began a gun fight with the five law enforcement officials. When the firing was over Chief Gossett was in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the stomach, he remained in the hospital and under doctors care until his death eight years later. Sheriff Waldo Williams died later that afternoon.
