Description: Sheriff Garfield was shot while attempting to take a man into custody on an insanity ruling. The man shot Sheriff Garfield in the back before retreating into his cabin. Sheriff Garfield drove until he ran out of gas then walked the rest of the way to the hospital where he died 12 days later. The man barricaded himself in his cabin and died in a fire set by the posse.
