Description: Chief Petty Officer Gustafson was on patrol at the wheel aboard a 75 foot vessel in Block Island Sound when the crew came under fire from another boat suspected of rum-running. Officer Gustafson was transported to a hospital in Connecticut with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead shortly after. Officer Harry Carison was also wounded but survived. The suspects were not apprehended.
