Description: Deputy Warden Gumm and Guard L.W. Lewis were shot by an inmate at the Kentucky State Penitentiary. The officers were acting on a tip that the inmate had a concealed weapon in his cell. The inmate shot the officers as they entered the cell. Deputy Gumm was shot in the abdomen and was transported to the hospital where he died. Guard Lewis survived his injuries. The inmate was convicted of murder and sentenced to death via the electric chair.
