Description: Detective Leon George and Deputy Marshal Samuel Lilly were shot and killed while attempting to serve an arrest for illegal bootlegging near Wilmington, North Carolina. The deputies had stopped in a swamp near Wilmington when they were ambushed and shot with rifles and handguns at close range in their automobile. The deputies and a police dog were killed instantly in the incident. Possemen succeeded in arresting the three leaders of the boot-legging operation in connection to the murder.
