Description: Chief Gilbert and Officer Hanson had stopped a large truck on the highway that was hauling forty-five cans of alcohol. They arrested the drivers who were known gangsters. Chief Gilbert called the federal authorities to report the incident. The suspects also threatened the Chief's life. Two weeks later Chief Gilbert was shot and killed as he sat near a window of his home reading a magazine. He was shot more than 30 times. A note delivered to the police station confirmed his death was in retaliation for the arrest he had made several weeks before. Chief Gilbert's wife was shot in the hand.
