Description: Deputy Sheriff Gowland was shot during a labor strike involving a group of over 200 trappers. An injunction had been issued by the court which prohibited the trappers from trespassing on the property. As the deputies approached the levee by boat to enforce the injunction, they were fired upon. Deputy Gowland died at the scene. Three men were arrested in connection with his murder.
