Description: Deputy Sheriff Griggs was beaten and shot multiple times by members of an anti-rent group as he and a posse attempted to serve a writ of ejectment. A second deputy was also wounded but survived. Deputy Griggs died of his injuries six days later. Five suspects were arrested.
