Description: Chief Garland responded to reports of heavy flooding on the Red River. A crowd of people had gathered on the bridge to watch the rising waters and did not realize they were in danger. Large logs from a railroad bridge upstream struck the concrete bridge causing the bridge to crumble. Chief Garland tried to warn the citizens to leave the bridge but the bridge collapsed, killing Chief Garland and six other citizens.
