Description: On June 19, 1908, Special Officer Gemmell was shot when he was summoned to settle a dispute between two men. When Officer Gemmell showed his badge, the suspect shot him twice in the neck and fled. Patrolman Frank Butman responded to the sounds of shots fired and was also shot by the fleeing suspect. The officers were transported to the hospital. Officer Gemmell was paralyzed as a result of the shooting and died three days later. Patrolman Butman survived his injuries. The suspect was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
