Description: Chief of Police Hayes was shot when he attempted to arrest an impaired suspect who was discharging his weapon in public and threatening to shoot family members and other citizens. Although mortally wounded, Chief Hayes took the suspect into custody. Chief Hayes died of his injuries four days later. The suspect was convicted of murder and executed by hanging.
