Description: Private Herman was killed by a band of outlaws affiliated with the Cortinistas. He was a member of a second company of 120 Rangers and 165 regular Army troops dispatched in the aftermath of the battle that killed Privates Thomas Grier, William McKay, John Fox and Nicholas Milett a month previously. The Army troops and Rangers defeated about 400 men under Cortina.
