Description: On August 6, 1985, Officer Hoffman was severely injured in a single-vehicle automobile accident while responding in his patrol car to assist another officer, with lights and siren activated. As Officer Hoffman rounded a sharp turn, the wheels left the roadway, which caused the car to slide then flip over. Officer Hoffman sustained a broken neck and was diagnosed as a quadriplegic. He was never able to return to work and was in ill-health. Twenty years later, on September 17, 2005, Officer Hoffman died of septic shock due to multiple organ failure.
