Description: Deputy Headen was supervising a gang of prisoners in Alum Rock Park, east of San Jose. The inmates were working a large derrick to remove massive rocks in the upper portion of the park. When one of the guy ropes snapped, a pole plummeted to the ground and struck Deputy Headen in the abdomen. Although Deputy Headen was in great pain, a doctor drove him home and put him to bed. Deputy Headen died later that evening.
