Description: On September 30, 2003, Detective Heywood was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop. Detective Heywood initiated a traffic stop and when he stepped in front of the vehicle to instruct the driver to back up out of the crosswalk, the driver intentionally put the vehicle in drive and struck Detective Heywood. The driver fled the scene but was captured later the same day. Detective Heywood developed complications related to his original injuries and required a five organ transplant. Detective Heywood died during surgery on May 28, 2015.
