Description: A political rally was being held on the south side of the 300 block of "D" Avenue. Asst. Chief Hawkins was coming down the north side of the street when the suspect stepped from the crowd across the street and shot Asst. Chief Hawkins. Asst. Chief Hawkins was unable to return fire due to the crowd behind the suspect. Asst. Chief Hawkins was mortally wounded and died about three days later. His assailant, who was the editor of the Lawton Democrat newspaper, was tried for murder and found guilty.
