Description: On June 19, 1984, Deputy Henry and two other officers responded to the scene of an F-18 fighter jet crash on Santa Catalina Island. While attempting to rescue the pilot, the officers were exposed to toxic fumes from the burning aircraft. None of the officers were wearing protective clothing. All the officers involved in the initial rescue developed pulmonary fibrosis. Deputy Henry was forced to medically retire from the department in 1984 and died shortly after receiving a lung transplant in May of 1995.
