Description: Deputy Horton and Sheriff H. Williams were examining two horses that were tied at the public square to determine if they were stolen. Two men approached them at a rapid pace and Sheriff Williams ordered them to halt. One of the men drew his gun and shot Deputy Horton, killing him instantly. Deputy Horton's assailant was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
