Description: On October 20, 1997, Patrolman Holand was assaulted when he answered a suspicious person call at a gas station. When Patrolman Holand approached the suspect to question him, the suspect punched Patrolman Holand in the left jaw. Patrolman Holand, bleeding and face swollen, was transported to the hospital. He was treated for a laceration of the inner mouth and swelling of the left cheek. An x-ray was performed and a tetanus shot was administered. Patrolman Holand was released the next day. A month later in November, Patrolman Holand was having problems with his speech and complained of weakness in his upper extremities and sought the medical help of a neurologist. By January of 1998, his condition worsened and he was diagnosed as having a motor neuron disease. Within the next five months, Patrolman Holand became permanently disabled. Patrolman Holand died of respiratory failure due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on July 28, 1998.
