Description: Private Hoffer was shot while attempting to arrest six prisoners who had escaped from the county jail. One of the inmates barricaded himself inside a house and exchanged gunfire with responding officers. Private Hoffer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital where he died of his injuries five days later. His assailant was killed in the shootout.
