Description: Chief Henderson was shot in an exchange of gunfire as he attempted to arrest a suspect who had just shot Patrolman Mercer Denby. Patrolman Denby had attempted to arrest the suspect for disturbing the peace. The suspect resisted arrest and shot Patrolman Denby with his own gun. Chief Henderson responded to the sounds of shots fired and shot at the suspect, wounding him. The suspect returned fire and shot Chief Henderson who died at the scene. Patrolman Denby died of his injuries a month later. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by electrocution.
