Description: Officer Hemschmeyer was responding to a backup call when a garbage truck, unable to stop, swerved into the path of the patrol car. The impact destroyed the police car, which slid 150 feet before striking a telephone pole. Officer Hemschmeyer was killed instantly. The driver was charged with vehicular manslaughter.
