Description: Deputy Hawks was fatally shot from behind, in an act of revenge, by a man angry about a court-imposed fine that the deputy had attempted to collect earlier. The suspect was arrested and tried in a court of law but since there were no witnesses to the murder, he was acquitted. When the man left the courthouse he was lynched by an angry mob.
