Description: Officer Heaps and fellow officers responded to a report of suspicious activity in a vacant field. As the Officers attempted to question three individuals in a motorhome, one of the men produced a handgun and began firing at the officers. Officer Heaps returned fire but was a shot in an area of his torso not protected by the protective vest. Officer Heaps died before reaching the hospital. The other two suspects died from gunshot wounds when the officers returned fire. The officers sustained minor wounds. One of the suspects was wanted for the murder of California Highway Patrol Officer Johnny Martinez on October 2, 1981.
