Description: Officers Hairston and Verne Bentley were on patrol when they heard shots fired. The officers responded and observed a man walking towards them with a rifle. The officers ordered the man to drop the weapon. The man continued to approach. Officer Hairston fired twice, striking the suspect in the chest. Officer Hairston exited the patrol car and ran a block and a half to the ice plant where he called for an ambulance. He then ran back to the scene of the shooting and collapsed. While en route to the hospital, Officer Hairston died of a heart attack.
