Description: Deputy Hendricks was in the process of feeding three prisoners and allowed one inmate out of his cell to empty "slops". When the prisoner returned, he placed a homemade rope around the Sheriff Hendricks' neck. The lawman's gun was taken and he was fired upon, but not injured. Deputy Hendricks was able to reach a derringer he had concealed and return fire. A gunfight ensued, and when the Sheriff was out of ammunition, he was killed instantly by a shot to the head with his own gun. Two of the inmates were returned to custody and one escaped.
