Description: Officer Hayes was attempting to take a suspect into custody when he was shot by the suspect. Officer Hayes died the next day from his wounds. The suspect was jailed in the county courthouse. However, upon learning of the officer?s death, an angry mob of citizens overpowered the Sheriff, took his gun and keys, removed the suspect from the jail and lynched him.
