Description: Lieutenant Jiles was shot and killed as he responded to a distress call from a local citizen about a suspicious vehicle. Lieutenant Jiles spotted the suspect car and gave pursuit. The suspect exited his vehicle and invaded the home of Robert Smith, and shot the elderly man several times. The suspect immediately exited that home and encountered Lieutenant Jiles. The suspect shot Lieutenant Jiles eight times and fled the scene. After the suspect was shot and killed, officers found a note left by the suspect at his residence, that convinced police authorities that the suspect was attempting suicide-by-cop.
