Description: Chief Jackson was shot in a gunfight with Iowa's most notorious criminal at that time, William "Dutch" Cross who was wanted in three states for robbery, burglary and murder. The Des Moines police received a tip that Dutch was in town. Chief Jackson and four of his detectives arrived at the residence, guns drawn. Dutch, who was hiding in the bedroom, emerged shooting when the officers called on him to surrender. Chief Jackson was struck in the chest but not before returning fire, shooting Dutch in the abdomen. Dutch managed to escape briefly, but was killed in a shootout with police officers. Detective Jackson died of his wounds four days later.
